I always used to think short-form videos could not be as valuable as long-form videos, but I was wrong. In this podcast, I explain why.


Why Short Form Videos?

Short-form videos: Is that the right choice or not? I'll delve into that in this particular podcast. Initially, I was someone advocating for long-form videos exclusively, focusing solely on YouTube, posting five to ten-minute videos. That was my approach until I realized the importance of mastering short-form content, as it aids in creating compelling longer-format content. Allow me to explain the concept first. Afterward, I'll guide you on where and how to apply the idea of short-form videos, attracting the right audience to your content. Additionally, I'll provide examples of typical and atypical videos that can cut through the online noise. I'll also share numerous hooks I've used for short-form videos to enhance the impact of my marketing efforts.

I'm thrilled about this journey, so let's get started by understanding the concept.

What is the purpose of short-form videos? Two kinds of people create content online: entertainers and educators. Entertainers focus on short-form videos for increased views and visibility, aiming to be seen, heard, and liked more. I'm addressing the educator group, specifically those who want to use short-form videos to deliver a high-impact message within a brief timeframe. Even in the educator space, there are those without funnels or products to sell, unlike what I'm doing. When I create a short-form video, there's a purpose and a journey behind it—not just to provide value or entertain, but to guide the audience through a specific journey.

So, there are four stages. The first stage is what I call the teaser stage. That's where all the short-form videos come into play. A teaser is, let's say, you're driving in a car, and then you arrive at a hotel or a restaurant. As you walk in, you notice an ad on the television promoting a particular movie – that's like a teaser. You become curious, thinking, "Wow, okay, I want to know more about this." Then, you go to YouTube on your phone, search for the movie trailer by typing the movie name and adding "trailer." Teasers are just a few seconds, but the trailer is longer, probably around one or two minutes, okay?

After being inspired, you decide to buy a ticket and actually go see the movie, which is a 90-minute experience. Once hooked on the movie, you might want to watch the sequel, the second part, the third part – similar to superhero movies like Avengers or DC Comics. The same principle applies in our funnels and our overall approach. The teaser content is what you do on Instagram Reels for one minute. If you can truly grab people's attention, you can lead them from the teaser to the trailer. The trailer, in this case, is the long-form video – something you might post on YouTube, which is around five minutes. Even this podcast serves as an example of trailer content. On Instagram Stories, I share a link to this podcast. You might have come from there or through other channels like Telegram, email, or various places. So, the teaser could be any piece of content that leads you here, and of course, the teaser is more than a one-minute video. The trailer is the longer format content.

The movie itself is like a webinar. I invite people to my daily webinars, and they become not just customers but customers for life. The ultimate goal of creating this content is to bring people into my world and on a journey. It's not just about acquiring a customer; it's about helping my customer achieve a result.

If you're someone listening to this podcast, I'm sure it's because you want to become a knowledge giver, make money online, build a business from home, spend more time with your family, and earn significant income with your knowledge. That's the essence of why you're listening to this podcast. Of course, you also seek new ideas or perspectives to grow as a person in the digital realm.

Now, let's delve into why short-form videos are important and where they can be effectively used.

There are two primary places where you need to use short-form videos. The first is Instagram Reels, and you can also push it on Facebook. Instagram and the Meta algorithm work in such a way that the first three seconds matter. When you upload a short-form video, a 45-second to one-minute video, if more people are watching or getting engaged in the first three seconds, Instagram will give that video a wider reach for the next three seconds. If more people continue watching without scrolling, Instagram will double the reach for the next six seconds.

And then, if more people watch until the 12th second, Instagram will again double the reach for the next six seconds. So that is how the algorithm has been designed, and that's how it works. That's why you may have noticed that some rules don't perform too well, and some videos go viral. This virality is determined by the number of seconds people watch.

As a knowledge giver, I did not believe in this even a few years ago, but now I believe that we all need to get damn good at capturing people's attention and keeping them hooked with short-format content. It's actually easy to create longer format content because it can be free-flowing and unscripted. However, when it comes to short content, even though I go unscripted, I want to ensure I can deliver a punch and make an impact within a few seconds.

The first area is to get more organic reach on Instagram through reels, allowing you to reach more people based on your video creation skills. What you say in the opening line matters. I'll provide some examples at the end, okay?

Now, if you know a particular video has gone viral, whatever you said connected an emotional chord with your market. You can use that same concept for running ads, video ads, and performance marketing. I run a lot of ads on Facebook and Instagram, and I'll give you examples of the different ads I'm currently running. Before, I relied on my ad agency to execute my ideas, but now I realize the importance of recording 45-second and 32-second ads to truly connect, grab attention, and make my ads stand out in the vast internet ocean.

The weather is a rising tide. Sometimes the cost per lead suddenly goes up, and sometimes it goes down. That's why it's crucial for all of us to get good at short-form videos, cutting through the noise and making our ads swim like dolphins in this ocean.

Let's look at typical ads. "Are you struggling with your weight? Hi, my name is so-and-so, a health and weight loss expert. Join my webinar or workshop for just ₹99." These are very typical ads. What I've done is different. If you check all the ads I'm currently running on Facebook, they're atypical. For example, I use various hooks in my ads, and I'll share some examples.

"The biggest mistakes I made as a coach are these three things: 1, 2, 3, 4. Hi, my name is Siddharth Rajsekar, and I help coaches launch using AI. Join my webinar to learn more." The hook is about the mistakes I made. Another one: "The three things you need to make three lakhs per month are these: a good product, a solid sales process, and leveraging the power of AI. Hi, my name is Siddharth Rajsekar, blah, blah, blah." Each hook is unique, not talking directly about the main topic.

Do you want to be part of a $350 billion trend? This is the best time to become a digital coach. Another hook: "Do you want to run a business while traveling without an office or employees? Imagine that." These are my first three seconds. I have multiple hooks like these, continuously coming up with more.

In the next part, I might say, "I cracked the code on how to build a business without any office. Hi, my name is Siddharth Rajsekar, and I'll share this." I've shared at least 10-15 different hooks running in my ads currently. The design of my short-form videos is structured: first, the hook in the initial three seconds, followed by the value in the next three seconds, making the first six seconds impactful. In nine seconds, I cover the entire value piece. It doesn't feel like an ad; it feels like an educational piece. Then, I close with my credentials, earning the right, and a call to action.

The main thing is I have 30 to 40 different hooks that I'm testing in my ads library. Within 2 to 3 weeks, I know which hooks are getting me sales, the lowest cost per lead, and which ones attract an audience willing to buy. Not just a low cost per lead, the purpose of the ad is to get a sale. This is why every coach, trainer, and expert needs to get good at short-form videos.

I've created over a thousand videos on YouTube, including interviews and long-form content, and I plan to continue producing more. The video you just watched serves as my trailer. My main focus this year, however, will shift towards creating teaser content, which is incredibly easy to produce. The tools I use include my iPhone's cinematic mode for recording, and the InShot app for editing. InShot allows you to add text, captions, and more. Another useful app for captions is simply called "Captions," which automatically generates captions for your videos, corrects errors, and offers additional features.

While there are many tools available, I highly recommend using your regular phone camera, InShot, and Captions for creating short-form videos.       Understanding the algorithm is crucial. The initial three seconds are critical. When you upload a short-form video, lasting between 45 seconds to a minute, if more viewers engage within the first three seconds, Instagram will expand its reach for the subsequent three seconds. Four stages in leading the ad. Teaser – short form video. Curious, you go to youtube, where the trailer is there… long form video. Then you buy the ticket.. it is the sales for webinar… a movie. Then you acquire a customer. You get a customer who will win along with you. It is to create a win win situation. Use it in Instagram reels (where the first 3 sec matters)..it will give wider reach for next 3 sec…and so on. It helps in capturing attention in a few second. Increases organic reach. If it gets viral…use the same content for ads. It will help in rationalizing the ads. Have different types of hooks in the videos. Design…hook (3s), value (6s), earning rights and CTA. Have a pool of 30-40 hooks. Analyze the effectiveness of the ads. So you need to be good in short form videos, eventually to get most cost effective sales.
